Spring is here and that means it’s time to talk about flooding and flood insurance. The snowmelt and seasonal rain that typically begins early in the year are two major causes of flooding. But did you know that if your pool were to burst or leak and the water enters your home, that is also considered flooding? Surface water that seeps into your home, under the door or into the basement is also considered flooding. These things are not covered by your homeowners policy. You need to purchase a flood policy to ensure these types of losses are covered.

Ask your agent about getting a flood insurance policy. Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the US. Let us help protect you from the flood.

Do you have your umbrella?

An umbrella policy provides additional liability coverage over and above the coverage you carry on your personal insurance policies covering vehicles, homes, boats, ect. Most basic policies cover lawsuits up to $300,000 or $500,000 per accident. But, if you injure someone seriously, you can exceed those limits in just medical bills or lost wages. If a judgment is rendered against you for more than your coverage limits, you will end up paying any extra amounts out of your assets or future income.

You can purchase a 1 million dollar umbrella policy for around $250 a year. Because it is easy to cause an injury serious enough where you’re sued for more than your basic coverage limits, I recommend everyone needs an umbrella, especially those who have current significant assets or income.

When purchasing an umbrella policy, your agent must make sure that your underlying auto, home, boat, ect liability limits meet certain minimum requirements-typically $300,000 or greater. This is a great way to receive an additional discount on your auto, home, other policies you currently have by adding an additional line of business.

Call your agent today and ask about an umbrella policy!

Dangerous winter weather will likely be here in the weeks ahead, so we'd like to remind you of a few helpful winter weather driving tips.

Drive for conditions-slower speeds, slower acceleration

Use your headlights

Don't use cruise control

Remember that 4 wheel and all wheel drive vehicles don't stop nor steer better on ice; be careful!

Leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Slow down at intersections, off ramps, bridges and shady spots

Stay at least 15 car lengths behind a snow plow, they have a limited field of vision. Only pass when safe or when the plow pulls off the road

check your tires and tire pressure during cold weather

get a vehicle winter maintenance check-up. Check your battery, belts, hoses, radiator, lights, brakes, heater/defroster and wipers

keep a full fuel tank, don't let it fall below half a tank on winter trips

It is also good to carry extra supplies with you in the winter. A good winter survival kit includes flashlights, batteries, blanket, snacks, water, gloves, boots and a first aid kit. Also keep an ice scraper/snowbrush, jumper cables and road flares on hand.

If worse comes to worse and you find yourself stranded, be safe. Stay in your vehicle, put on your flashers, call for help and wait until it arrives.

Stay safe this winter, and remember, summer is coming!!!
